The Illustrated Life of Ashley

The Illustrated Life of Ashley

On a gloomy afternoon sometime in early November somewhere in the heart of the city, Ashley  walked into a Cafe to see us Rollover girls for a little chit-chat. You couldn't mistake her for anyone else, as she gives off an undeniable sense of city girl style. Low-rise jeans paired with a flowy semi-sheer cotton outer with the sash styled tied around her waist, giving off that laid-back chic with that touch of summer vacation ease. Accompanied by the timeless Alaïa Vienne Leather Ballet flats, and the most head turning Yves Saint Laurent Mombasa Hobo bag in brown leather with a unique horn handle that made our internal fashion souls scream.

Ashley Setiawan, is an animator and illustrator. She studied illustration at Parsons School of Design New York and graduated in the Spring of 2023. Now she is currently a freelance illustrator with an amazing clientele list; Kate Spade, Farfetch, Universal Music Group, Atlantic Records, Wildflower Cases (poke, poke WonderBalm in Devon), Coup De Main (for Maya Hawke and Beabadoobee), The Big Silly Trivia game, Melissa, and Rollover! She’s the illustrator behind our latest WonderPerfume! and WonderBalm! launch campaign. Yes, we know it's really cute.

We had a fun little conversation with her, something a little here and there as an introduction for Ashley!

My favorite way to get inspired is to listen to new music and take a nap.

When i’m in a creative block I usually make some crappy art, anything is better than being stuck in a rut.

My current obsession is LUX - Rosalia, doomscrolling through The RealReal, wearing matching items with friends, heated eye pads, going to bed earlier, perfume samples.

My ‘signature’ in my artworks are its textures and colors. I draw everything digitally but I try to make it appear as if I use layers of color pencils on paper.

My favorite artwork of all time is Silueta Series by Ana Mendieta (1973-1980). It’s a beautiful series of sculptures and performances where Mendieta creates silhouettes of herself across time and different places. I’m often moved by pieces that have a sense of mysticism, it’s so otherworldly. I think it’s brilliant how Mendieta becomes one with the land, left her traces and lets these traces disappear by the same earth she became one with.

The best gift I have ever received are my red repetto ballet flats from my mom. The perfect staple red pair of shoes for that pop of color on any outfit!

I’m more likely to be inspired by people than places, even when I travel. It’s fun to be inspired and influenced by the people around me, whether it’s my super cool friends or clients. I’m not sure if I remember a specific story. I probably have specific instances where I’m very inspired by someone but couldn’t think of any at the moment. For the most part I think it happens subconsciously. I rarely look at someone and think that they will inspire me in a very specific way. It always happens when I’m not realizing it and with the people I see or talk to everyday.

The one thing I’ve learned about staying creative is to not ask for too much creative advice. For the most part you won’t listen to it anyways and it’ll only cause more confusion.

My personal style signifier is honestly not sure if I have one. I don’t think I dress very distinctively. I do know what I like and what I don’t when it comes to picking my clothes. I dress quite feminine and I gravitate towards clothes with different textures and materials. Like sheer fabric, lace, silk, pieces with ruffles and beadings.

The book I always come back to is The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov just for the sake of a good time or Letters to a Young Poet by Rilke for times when I need a little extra more comfort and reassurance.

In another life, I believe I would have been a mermaid. I’ve always wanted to be Aquamarine or the girls from h2o. Because honestly, who wouldn't love to hang out at the beach all day and nailing the perfect salty-beach wave hair?

My Style icon is my mom! 50% of what I wear are her clothes and jewelry.

The one beauty product I can't live without is Blush! Having pink cheeks makes me feel like a cartoon character in the best way possible.

The best advice I’ve ever received about art (or life) is “Unfortunately we only get 24 hours in a day. And only 365 days a year. We have to spend a lot of that time eating, sleeping, answering emails, texting, running errands, riding the train/bus/cab/elevator, relaxing, taking showers, brushing our teeth, being on hold, sitting in waiting rooms, washing clothes, washing dishes, waiting in line, applying makeup, sitting on the toilet, being sick in bed, looking for your phone, responding to emails/texts, booking things, looking for things, grocery shopping, undoing and redoing things, filling out forms and reading instructions. I refuse to believe that any of that time is a waste. And if those things aren’t also moments of you “living life to the fullest,” then I give up.” - Jemima Kirke
